Bristol Big'Uns
Welcome to our forums. The Bristol Big'Uns are a group of people who enjoy fantasy, science fiction and historical wargames. We tend to play mostly table-top wargames but you will sometimes see CCGs, CMGs, RPGs or board games. If this sounds like a hobby you currently enjoy then why not come along. The club is based at Iron Acton, between Bristol and Yate, in the recently refurbished Parish Hall and is held Sunday evenings from 6 pm until 10 pm. There are tables and chairs available plus various sized scenic mats and terrain for table-top wargames. Please bring with you any drinks or snacks that you require.

Re: Hoplite Warfare from Osprey

Oh no! Not another tempting Osprey!

It does look like a great way to use those long forgotten hoplites.

I will be taking a look and there's another hoplite type of game based on test of honour coming out soon as well but in the meantime if you want to crack out the hoplites and do battle using war & conquest just let me know

Kind regards

My copy arrived today, a full week before official release.

Initial flick through seems encouraging.

Cheers

Re: Hoplite Warfare from Osprey

I have read through the rules and think they look interesting and playable.

I have hoplites but probably need to add some psiloi.

Happy to give them a try soon.

Re: Hoplite Warfare from Osprey

I have gone through my Greeks and am pleased to report I can field a 20/25mm force to play. I will use my hoplites who are on 40x40 bases (4 figures) - 2 bases, plus an officer and second rank between them to give the suggested 10 man units. This would mean using a 20mm Base Width measurement.

Hopefully this will fit in with others’ basing.

I will aim to paint up a few psiloi so I can have a bit more variety. I reckon I could also field a Macedonian force and if I find a few suitable officer figures then I could field some Hill Tribe (Thracians).

Re: Hoplite Warfare from Osprey

Don't forget the unit size & ground scale are not fixed, so fielding say 12 figure units, even against 10 figure units is just fine.
As for ground scale, we just need to agree what's being used. Inches is probably just about the simplest.

That's my take on things, anyway.

Re: Hoplite Warfare from Osprey

Fair point, John.  I’m all for keeping things simple and old fashioned enough to cope better with inches.

I guess the units have to be broadly the same size in terms of area so that it works for supporting units.

Re: Hoplite Warfare from Osprey

Thanks for the link John. An interesting read and one that demonstrates the flexibility of the system in terms of unit size and ground scale.

Cheers
