Bristol Big'Uns
Welcome to our forums. The Bristol Big'Uns are a group of people who enjoy fantasy, science fiction and historical wargames. We tend to play mostly table-top wargames but you will sometimes see CCGs, CMGs, RPGs or board games. If this sounds like a hobby you currently enjoy then why not come along. The club is based at Iron Acton, between Bristol and Yate, in the recently refurbished Parish Hall and is held Sunday evenings from 6 pm until 10 pm. There are tables and chairs available plus various sized scenic mats and terrain for table-top wargames. Please bring with you any drinks or snacks that you require.

From the bookings bod:

I’m afraid I’m going to cancel your 20th October 2024 booking. I will always try to avoid this but we have the chance to host a concert for group of cello player who are travelling from across the SW and they’ll be accompanied by the Iron Acton Community Choir. The cellist leader suggested they could finish with Warhammer music and you all come along to the concert but I think he was joking! I hope you will appreciate its an exceptional circumstance.

As a club, we never really got into Mordheim when it was released. It is supposed to be a very good game. Personally, I can't commit to a campaign at the moment, as I'm already in 3! (LotRCCG, OathSworn and 3.5e D&D).

I played Kings of War against Les tonight. I haven't played KoW for over a year. We had a good, close game with Les winning by a narrow margin in the final turn. The game rekindled my enthusiasm for the game.

Below is a message sent to Steve about an increase in the hire cost for the hall. The increase will mean we need to have 10 people playing every week to break even at our current subs rate (£3.00). Steve and I will assess the financial situation and see if the subs need to rise to make the club sustainable. We appreciate that everyone is feeling the pinch at the moment and are happy to explore options.

"At the Parish Hall Management Committee meeting last Wednesday the decision was made to increase our Hire Charges.  This is our first increase since February 2017. With the cost of electricity and oil rising dramatically we have no other choice if we are to continue to maintain the Hall to its present standard.Your hiring fee will increase from £26 per evening to £30 per evening on 1st November 2022.Please would you be as economic as possible and make sure you do not leave lights and other electrical goods running when you vacate the Hall.Thank you for your cooperation and continuing support of the Parish Hall."

We managed to not lock up our scenery cupboard, leave fire doors propped open and lights on at the hall last night. The Parish Hall Committee has threatened to revoke our hiring privileges as this voids their insurance and breaches the Covid 19 rules.

It is vital that we come together as a club for the clean down and lock up. It can't be left to the same 1 or 2 people each time.

I thought last night went well. It was good to see and talk to people. Everyone had a mask and the few things to remember are straight forward - sanitise hands on entry, someone sign in the log book, open the windows and fire exit for air flow, take a list of names and phone numbers of who attended and don't touch nothing you don't have to! ;-)

As I didn't stay to the end how was final clean down? Any issues for the PH committee?

p.s. we are the only group using the hall at the moment.

Great job Dave.

1.Are there any special requirements regarding use of toilets?
2. Is there need to mention don't go into other rooms, or use the phone (or touch anything you shouldn't).
3. Will the proposed advance payment approach work for occasional attendees?

1. Not that I'm aware of. With everyone washing their hands and the amount of cleaning done in toilets they are probably pretty safe.
2. I don't want to over egg the pudding. I think people appreciate the situation we're in.
3. It should do. We are required to record names and phone numbers of all attendees every week.
