Bristol Big'Uns
Welcome to our forums. The Bristol Big'Uns are a group of people who enjoy fantasy, science fiction and historical wargames. We tend to play mostly table-top wargames but you will sometimes see CCGs, CMGs, RPGs or board games. If this sounds like a hobby you currently enjoy then why not come along. The club is based at Iron Acton, between Bristol and Yate, in the recently refurbished Parish Hall and is held Sunday evenings from 6 pm until 10 pm. There are tables and chairs available plus various sized scenic mats and terrain for table-top wargames. Please bring with you any drinks or snacks that you require.

WaT camapign

I was thinking of the 3rd Sunday of each month (not set in stone so if people could only do 2nd Sunday one month then nay problemo).

I thought the 20th May would be a good start.

I’ve played it in 28mm, 20mm, & 15mm (its playable in 10mm) and without a doubt 15mm is best for cost and it looks the best on a 6’ x 4’ table ( 20mm is as good) & it gives plenty of space to manoeuvre in. Plus, 15mm miniatures appears to have the best variety. I’ve found JgdPz IV/70’s in 15mm. For our campaign I’m making up  PzIIIG, PzIIIJ early, Pz IIIJ late, PzIIIL ( Brits called this the Pz III special), Pz IVD, Pz IVF1, Pz IVF2 ( special), then for Tunisia, Pz IVG, PzIIIN, Tiger I, Stug III, & a Ferdinand if I can find a model.

If we start off early 1942 in the desert that gives a nice array of starter tanks.

I’m going to start off in a PzIIIG with the short 60mm gun.

If people can’t make a game it’s okay as the progression system allows people to fit in as and when.

As soon as The Two Fat Lardies produce the campaign system we can use that instead of the progression system in the rule book.

You don’t need to buy the rules as there is a very good play aid and the dashboard on their webpage to down load.

Desert terrain will include hillocks which will block line of sight and give a degree of cover if you expend a drive Dice to go hull down on the hillock crest line. Also if you position your tank near the side of a hillock dependant on the line of fire it’s possible to get partial or a major obstruction. Clumps of palm trees will provide partial obstruction cover to any tank deployed in them, but won’t effect their fire. The odd building will provide the usual opportunities to seek cover.

How many people would be able to start on the 20th May?

Any suggestions or ideas will be assessed and put in file 13.

Re: WaT camapign

We have some good desert terrain at the club, so that works nicely.

15mm is fine by me, will have to make a small purchase or 2 though - happy to play German or British
I will be interested in the 20th but probably won't have the rules or tank by then (see notes on discounts if anyone wants tanks or rules as I can get them) so may need a loan for the opening game

Re: WaT camapign

Hi Nigel,
Can’t do the 20th as I’m already fully booked for May ;0).
Free any Sunday in June at the moment.
As for the rest all sounds good to me,have my tanks already and happy to lend out to others if needed.
There might be some spare German tanks up for grabs but Dreads needs to sort through them first to see what he wants to keep.
Cheers,Steve.

Re: WaT camapign

Hi Kevin,

Oops meant Italy, they were relegated to Italy after the shite performance at Kursk, definitely none in Tunisia though. I have discovered that Zvezda do 15mm models and they do a Ferdinand so ordered one to see what the kits are like. I have some of their planes and they are quite good.

The 3D stuff are you doing some targeted counters like the Star Wars ones? As we played three games of tanker at BIG on Friday and they are definitely needed, especially if we end up with like 4-5 people per side playing. Also a counter with “+1” would be handy as well as a couple of times we forgot this modifier which can change a miss into a very important hit. A set of three target & three +1 counters would be ideal ( happy to give you some dosh for them) as three tanks is about the limit one player can handle. And in two player games you definitely need to command two tanks each as a minimum, and three as a maximum.

Are you playing on the 20th?

Re: WaT camapign

Hoping to but as my next deadly bout of chemo is on the 18th, I have no idea whether my body will be up to it...

Will think about how to do tokens - currently struggling with printing roofs for 15mm Normandy buildings

Re: WaT camapign

Hope the chemo isn’t too rough. & see you as soon as you feel up to it.

Don’t worry about the tokens you’ve other things in your mind than farting about with them.

I may have but there are times when distractions are good for me - anyway have come up with some prototypes that I will print out once I get a suitable gap between Normandy buildings...

Re: WaT camapign

Now is it Herr Dreads or What ho dreads? If what ho henries are you going to be a donkey walloper?

I’ve only got nasty Nazi tanks at the moment. I’m building 20mm & 15mm so I can play against Alan’s array of 15’s & 20’s.

What array of tank(s) do you have?

If there’s just the two of us it’s a good idea to have two tanks each as it makes a better game.

Just spoken to Alan and we’ve decided to postpone are KOW league game to June so we can join in with this.

Re: WaT camapign

I shall be there with my M3 Honey. I'll bring a selection of other AFVs in case anyone who is tank less can join in.

Also if its not already been mentioned Peter Pig do some nice 15mm models.

Also a good book to help understand what its like to be a tank commander is By tank into Normandy by Stuart Hills. Its a great read so far although the title is misleading as he actually arrived in Normandy by dingy as the DD Sherman he was commanding sank about 700 yds off Sword beach. I have also lined up Alamein to Zem Zem by Keith Douglas a tanker's experience in N Africa - hopefully that's a good read as well.

Re: WaT camapign

Jay and I will be there too, though will need loaner tanks in 15mm. With over 400 20mm vehicles not going to change scale at this stage and start buying again.

Re: WaT camapign

When i can eventually play i will start in the Italian Semovente 75/18, if it arrives in the post in time, otherwise it will be a Panzer 2G

Re: WaT camapign

In theory I will be there, if theres too many players perhaps we should have 2 games? One in 15mm and 1 in 20mm?

I won't have the rules and may need a tank, depending on the scale used

Re: WaT camapign

Not sure yet if I can be there on 20th but if I do the plan is to bring an Italian contingent in 15mm of M14/41 and Semovente 75/18 providing they arrive in time. For the first time ever an order from Caliver Books has gone astray in the post so I have had to ask for the order to be resent.

Re: WaT camapign

Scale:

I chose 15mm to start with as it was quicker to get the initial tanks for our desert campaign. But I’m also doing 20mm ( got three late war ones at present). As I have no collection of either scale & needing only one of each type of tank I going to do both scales. I do prefer 20mm, but there’s some great 15mm terrain available. So going to concentrate on 15mm but getting the odd 20mm as and when.

My 15mm Pz IIIG arrived today so going to do basic paint job so it’s ready to rock on Sunday. I got a Zvezda Pz IVD, which will do for a D or E, not bad little 15mm model.

Ogrekan, if you bring your plethora of 20mm, are these North Afrika ones, we could use them if there’s too much of a mismatch with what people have.

Robs idea of 2 tables sounds good if we have too many players, 3 per side is the max for one table I would think for an evening.

Re: WaT camapign

If we go 2 tables we could always do one 15mm & one 20mm as we’ve got plenty of  desert terrain.

Re: WaT camapign

Desert theme is more limited. British can do 2 x m3 honey, a valentine, 2 x crusader. german can do pzii, pziii and pziv. Also they had marders in Africa so have them too.couple of each of the german marks. No Italians I'm afraid.

Oops, my mistake, I can't start with the Semovente 75/18 so for me it will be an M13/40 or Panzer II G depending on what i get painted first

Re: WaT camapign

Found a nifty desert extras for WaT, has the effect of dust which was a real problem for fighting in the desert. Not the Khamsin but vehicle dust created as you move.

Re: WaT camapign

Si - having seen a few folks this morning I think the general plan is turn up and sort it out when we arrive - I haven't been able to find my 40+ year old tanks, its too hot in the loft to move the boxes to get at them!

All - I hope to be there but if I'm not there in time start without me...
