Bristol Big'Uns
Welcome to our forums. The Bristol Big'Uns are a group of people who enjoy fantasy, science fiction and historical wargames. We tend to play mostly table-top wargames but you will sometimes see CCGs, CMGs, RPGs or board games. If this sounds like a hobby you currently enjoy then why not come along. The club is based at Iron Acton, between Bristol and Yate, in the recently refurbished Parish Hall and is held Sunday evenings from 6 pm until 10 pm. There are tables and chairs available plus various sized scenic mats and terrain for table-top wargames. There is a 'tuck shop' happily providing crisps, chocolate and fizzy drinks plus tea and coffee at a reasonable price.

These MDF spaceships look like a cost effective alternative to regular miniatures:

There is an interesting article on Billion Suns website about suggested ship sizes which includes this advice:

"Having your ships mounted on pegs or magnets so that you can temporarily remove the ship allows you to leave the base and flight peg in play, but remove the bulk of the miniature until it can again fit. Having a marker on the base that identifies the heading of the ship allows you to rotate the ship to a place it can fit without losing game state information"

(In case of physical clashes during the battle)

I know very little apart from watching a couple of Youtube videos  but the general message seems to be that any models will do and utility ships and tiny fighters are just as important as larger ships,  even more so in smaller games.

I have an old fleet from Firestorm Armada and have ordered merchant ships plus fighters from Brigade

I haven't done any videos. There are probably more on Youtube about building and modding cars than actually playing the game. I haven't played since Refuelled came out so probably need to re-read from scratch.

With cars being so easy to get I seem to have built up quite a collection of cars and scenery, tons of the things in fact !!

OK, projects for 2021...

- I have a fairly large 15mm WW2 Japanese commission to do for someone
- I would like to get my Old West gangs painted - I managed to assemble the buildings earlier this year
- 15mm ancients - I have a Carthaginian army that is crying out for attention as opponents for the Romans I painted during 2020
- 28mm sci fi - I am enjoying "repurposing" some of my old sci fi figures for the Star Breach skirmish game and have some terrain to build and paint too. This fits in with my philosophy of gaming that will fit on a 2, 3 or 4 foot square wherever possible for solo play. Stargrave will also hopefully be a thing for me in 2021.
- Finally, I have enjoyed painting some of my 6mm Napoleonics this year and will continue to do this and some 6mm ECW too if time permits

Cheers, Andy

Oh and Gaslands, lots of Hotwheels cars need chopping up ha ha

Having played Man O War, Pirates (CMG) and Uncharted Seas in the past this caught my attention.

The blurb says the game is based on Warlord's Black Seas naval rules. Does anyone have any experience of Black Seas? Comments? Likes or dislikes?

Cheers,
Andy

A nice touch is that they send you a PDF of the rules on release day when you order a hardcopy of the rulebook.

Bit of a longshot but thinking ahead for when Billion Suns is published...

Does anyone here have any Relthoza ships from Firestorm Armada that they want to get rid of? I have half a fleet and would like to bulk it out a bit.

Cheers, Andy

Not quite on-topic but for a small scale sci fi game that has a free rules download, can use literally any sci fi figures and will never need new codexes then StarBreach is getting a growing following:

Well my old unused and unpainted figures, originally intended for DBA , have proved enough for a reasonable sized Caesarian Roman force but without the rulebook i am unclear what i will need in the way of officers, musicians, standard bearers etc. In lockdown mode i have made some good progress painting them and they are starting to look ok.

As for opponents i have a Gallic/Ancient Brit force which needed a bit of bulking out but Essex Miniatures promptly provided some suitable 15mm reinforcements. These have only progressed to the undercoat stage so far but will receive attention soon.

Pictures to follow when the armies are presentable.
