Bristol Big'Uns
Welcome to our forums. The Bristol Big'Uns are a group of people who enjoy fantasy, science fiction and historical wargames. We tend to play mostly table-top wargames but you will sometimes see CCGs, CMGs, RPGs or board games. If this sounds like a hobby you currently enjoy then why not come along. The club is based at Iron Acton, between Bristol and Yate, in the recently refurbished Parish Hall and is held Sunday evenings from 6 pm until 10 pm. There are tables and chairs available plus various sized scenic mats and terrain for table-top wargames. Please bring with you any drinks or snacks that you require.

I have been diagnosed with terminal cancer and the doctors best guess is that I have around 6 to 9 months to live.   Over the years, I have collected and lost a wide variety of paints, games and models and realise I won’t need them where I am going so once I sort through the lot I will put a list up.  All stuff free but donations to a cancer charity welcomed.

Things I know I have...
Loads of Carnevale models and scenery
Warhammer 40K - I subscribed to the recent magazine thing and most are untouched.

Seeing this post made me realise that with my medical issues, I have not been able to even visit (let alone play at) Big Uns this year.   2020 has definitely been a bad year.

As COVID has caused the US to cancel almost all the wargaming shows this year, the US Historical Gaming Society have arranged a virtual convention starting this Thursday.  The event will include a variety of online participation  games, a virtual vendor hall and a series of talks.   Most of the details are on Facebook but https://www.hmgs.org/page/CyberWarsSTD01 gives an overview.

The only downside is that many of the events appear to be in the evenings US time so this is one for the night owls but Saturday and Sunday have events from 0800EDT (1300BST) including talks from people in both the US DoD “professional” wargaming community and the Canadian DND talking about a Vassal based wargame they created to educated their politicians and senior officials about coping with COVID.  There are also talks from published authors as well as game company reps (Warlord, PSC, Firelock Games and others) giving “sneak previews” of their plans for the rest of this year and next.

Heard on a podcast that they intend to record most of the talks so might be available later via YouTube.

No additions to Dreads initial thoughts but one that probably needs to be brought to the hall committee - how long has the water been standing as it may require a good flush through before use.

No problems with face coverings - they are annoying but becoming the norm when interacting with people.

For payments, is it worth setting up a PayPal money pool and pay subs in that way?

A very pleasant surprise at the start of the week when I got notified that I will receive a delivery.  Problem is that I don’t recognise the sender...   parcel arrives and it is a nice big box and when I open it, it is full of 17th century (aka the age of piracy) ships, rules and accessories.

As Oak & Iron is a ship to ship combat game set in the age of cannons, there are obvious comparisons with Warlord Games Black Seas but having read the rules and watched a couple of bat reps on YouTube, I am hopeful that it will be a lot more playable, and a lot more balanced.  In some regards the rules remind me of x-wing as you have to plan certain elements ahead and you can buy upgrades for your ships (and even hire a famous admiral to lead your crew).

The base game comes with rules for 4 nationalities (English, French, Spanish & Dutch) as well as pirates with “national” traits (for example pirates can’t take ships of the line and other nationalities can buy certain upgrades cheaper) and 6 plastic ships (only one of which really needs glue).   The models are all 1:600 scale and as the hulls are printed in a brown plastic and the sails are an off-white, you can get away without painting them (but I will be painting the 20+ ships I got through the Kickstarter.

A pdf of the Oak and Iron rules has just been made available at https://www.firelockgames.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Oak-Iron-Rulebook-full.pdf - unfortunately the cards for ships etc aren’t available so hard to play test

Agree with both of you

I have a load of tiremes from Langton somewhere - was going to write some rules but are there any decent ones out there?

Rob,

Don’t know how good the rules are but Firelock Games have a 1/600th game called Oak and Thunder due out soon (I became aware of it on Kickstarter).  Have heard good things about their 28mm Blood and Plunder rules so might be worth a look if/when they come out.

Keen to engage but obviously if I am having a bad day health wise I may be forced to pull out.  Have just got the starter set as well as the Italian fleet (for some reason I can’t find any rules that they travel faster going backwards).

It’s not just your mug - I will swear that I head your dulcet tones on the videos as well..

As a matter of interest, how were the points allocated, was it solely on win/draw or did you get bonus points for “a narrow loss”?

Looks like we will need a pool of Vyrmin for week 3’s scenario as the battles will be fought over a nest and so the rats aren’t happy that they are being disturbed...  no specific mission

Week 3 Special Rules – Protect the Nest!

The Veer-myn colony on Starfall isn’t going to let their nest be overrun by invaders (or by rival Veer-myn broods). As such, any firefights in the area surrounding Mining Facility J28 are likely to attract unwanted attention from the resident Veer-myn population.

Having seen the environment rules, it almost appears that they want to encourage close combat - I would hate to play (non kalyshi) asterians under these rules - driving rain and toxic mists degrade their ability to shoot and electrical storms might mean most of their models will be pinned (or worse)...

As a nameless player, looking forward to these challenging environments....

Rules for Toxic Mist (Toxic Smokescreen)
The cube fills with Toxic smoke; the effect is identical to a Smoke Grenade going off in the model’s cube with the added bonus of the smoke being Toxic. As long as a model remains in the smoke-filled cube it is treated as having the Vulnerable ability. Models that are immune to Toxic are immune to the Toxic effects of a Toxic Smokescreen. Models that are already Vulnerable suffer no additional effects. Adjacent cubes are not affected by this Toxic effect.

Toxic mist disperses in the same way as a Smoke Grenade (At the start of each round, roll a d8 1-4 tgd Toxic Mist goes away, 5-8 it remains in place).
