Bristol Big'Uns
Welcome to our forums. The Bristol Big'Uns are a group of people who enjoy fantasy, science fiction and historical wargames. We tend to play mostly table-top wargames but you will sometimes see CCGs, CMGs, RPGs or board games. If this sounds like a hobby you currently enjoy then why not come along. The club is based at Iron Acton, between Bristol and Yate, in the recently refurbished Parish Hall and is held Sunday evenings from 6 pm until 10 pm. There are tables and chairs available plus various sized scenic mats and terrain for table-top wargames. Please bring with you any drinks or snacks that you require.

Well spotted John.

I’m not normally a fan of new editions as some companies seem to bring them out every 6 months to replace the ones that were released without adequate proof reading but in this case the original Lion Rampant was published in 2014 and has provided hours of fun.  I believe the 2nd Edition will include Dark Age Forces that appeared in an article in Wargames Illustrated.

I shall be saving my pocket money for a copy!

Good to have a light at the end of a long tunnel.

Given all the painting everyone has been doing we will be spoilt for choice of games.

Thanks John. A good spot!

The crusades book is very nicely done and adds a lot of flavour to Lion Rampant.

Hopefully we can play them face to face one day!

Cheers

On that basis there could be no more than four people per game with two on each side of a 6 x 4 table to maintain the required social distance of 1 metre plus if wearing a face covering. BIG limit it to two people per table.

I returned to the club last Sunday after months of absence and it was great to be able to play again.

Having recently played at BIG and seen how they operate I would like to make an observation about the way we deal with Covid.

My impression on Sunday was of a very busy and crowded hall and I felt that social distancing was not being fully observed as people played and moved around the hall. I would respectfully suggest that to avoid any problems with the hall committee or of a more serious nature we all think about how we behave, particularly in light of the latest rule of 6 guidance.

I initially missed this message as I haven’t logged in for a few days and so it wasn’t  on the main page and was several slots down the list.

Can it be given priority to ensure everyone sees it?

In the current climate it would be helpful to those of us who attended last week to have some idea what those ‘circumstances’ are.

There was also an article in WI 374 December 2018 ‘Bedford Beseiged - A Lion Rampant Seige Campaign’ by Dan Mersey. This gives a variety of forces for both Beseiged and Beseigers and a number of scenarios. The action takes place outside the castle walls so no large castle is required to play.

There was also a Dark Age adaptation by Dan Mersey - ‘Landwasters and Raven Feeders’ in an earlier WI but I don’t remember which one.

Thanks for the update, John. I will be getting a copy (price permitting!) as it looks like a really good addition to the excellent Lion Rampant collection.

I did buy Outremer: Faith and Blood but it has a different approach and requires more paperwork creating and developing the characters.

Hi Andy,

Alan, Howard, Nige and me have all been inspired by the YouTube videos and having joined in a demo game at Crusade I can vouch for it being an interesting and entertaining set of rules, as is usual with TFL products. We will be sticking with 28mm although Alan is going down the route of using Peter Dennis paper soldiers. Makes good sense for you to use 15mm if you already have plenty of them and no reason why the rules won’t work equally well.

Fingers crossed we will actually get to play a game at the club before too much longer.

Cheers

As we are all aware normal life is becoming rather challenging and gatherings are becoming less acceptable. I wonder what other members feel about our gaming evenings in a location which is used by a variety of people and whether we need to agree any measures to minimise risk for all concerned?

Whilst individuals playing across the table allows for the recommended distancing a multi player game does not.

Speaking as someone in the more vulnerable age bracket I am increasingly conscious of taking steps to reduce risk of infection.

Any thoughts?

I have a copy of this game which is minus the Forces of Good figures but has everything else, including the rules manual still in its shrink wrapping.

Is there anyone out there who would be interested in making me a reasonable offer for this? The complete game costs £90 but can be bought for £70/75. Clearly there is a good saving by buying the box set as the contents, minus the Forces of Good, would cost over £130 at full GW prices.

Send me a PM if you are interested.

Thanks,

Mike

Likewise!

The figures are priced at £10 for the Sequitors and £25 for the Chainrasps. No wonder GW shares reached £63 today!

A useful source of 13 plastic Miniatures ( 3 Sequitors and 10 Chainrasps), 6 dice and a clear plastic ruler for £2.99.

I am sure the figures could be retasked for KOW.

I have just seen 1917 and can recommend it as a it contains some brilliant cinematography and gives a great sense of conditions in that period.

I have to say there are some plot anomalies but if you suspend disbelief then it is well worth seeing.

Firstborn had just arrived so wargaming took a back seat for a while.
Up to then I had been playing a Western Desert campaign using 6mm tanks and WRG rules, and various board games including Diplomacy.

Sounds intriguing.

Presumably the points cost of the monster is not relevant and it does not count as part of the 750 points?

Happy to report that my copy turned up today. Felt sorry for the postwoman as it is a hefty volume. Sadly the spell cards are currently out of print so I will have to wait for them.

Mildly dischuffed that the points have changed for the Goblins so I will have to reconfigure my force for the campaign. But it is a good excuse to buy a Mawpup Launcher!

Just need to wait for the next volume of army lists so I can see what has happened to the Herd.
